Aquatic plants serve an important purpose in an aquatic environment. They play a key component in maintaining and enhancing the ecological balance in ponds, lakes, wetlands, rivers, and streams. Beneficial aquatic plants have many values. To touch on a few, aquatic plants serve as: an important buffer (filter) against nutrient loading and toxic chemicals, key stabilizer against erosion, important fish and wildlife habitat, and direct competition against algae and other undesirable plant species.
